Information for New Cavers

Caves are fragile environments and can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. In most cases, cavers will not disclose cave locations to people they don't know - there have been too many cases of people getting lost or injured or damaging the caves. For those who are new to caving, or are thinking of trying caving, we strongly suggest that you start by coming to a Grotto meeting. See the home page for the latest meeting information.

At the meeting, you will have a chance to get to know some of the local area cavers and to find out about Grotto-sponsored caving trips suitable for beginners. Most tourist trips are open to everybody, even if you've never been underground before, and the Grotto can loan you a helmet, lamp and cave pack to get you started.

If you want to get an idea of what the cave environment is like and what clothing and equipment you will need, see the information sheet (4K PDF file).

Cavers who want to use the above information sheet for non-profit use (handouts for scout groups, for example) are welcome to do so.
